Caves

The Margaret River region is best known for surfing, swimming, forests and wine, but did you know that we also have some impressive caves? Whether you’re a veteran caver or just looking for something new to see on a rainy day, if you want to experience some spectacular underground scenery.

There are three major Margaret River caves open to visitors year-round. Here is what you can expect from these unique sites:

Jewel Cave

42 meters deep and 1.9 kilometers long, this cave contains one of the world’s largest straw stalactites. This cave was not fully explored until 1958, and opened to the public the following year.

Tours departing 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30 pm

Lake Cave

Descending a 350-step staircase past ancient 20-story karri trees, you can witness firsthand the majestic beauty of this place, described as “The Queen of the World” for its intricate crystalline formations, pristine lake waters, and a noteworthy formation known as the “Suspended Table” – a 5-tonne column of calcite that seems to hover in midair over the lake.

Tours departing 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30 pm

Mammoth Cave

See the full force of nature at work within the craggy walls of this 30 meter deep, 500 meter long gothic-looking cave. This cave is particularly significant to the field of palaeontology, and scientists continue to do research here to learn more about the ancient plant and animal life of Western Australia. Bones and fossils have been found here from animals such as the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) and Zygomaturas (a giant marsupial similar to a Pygmy Hippopotamus).
